To support its expansion and modernize its manufacturing capabilities, Dispersa AG initiated construction of a new, state-of-the-art production facility in Hettlingen, a town near Winterthur. This groundbreaking event represented a major investment in infrastructure, aimed at increasing production capacity and meeting stringent quality standards for pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Dispersa AG officially commenced production at the new Hettlingen site. The facility was equipped with advanced technology for the manufacture of sterile ophthalmic products, positioning the company as a leading supplier in Switzerland and beyond. The move to Hettlingen enabled Dispersa AG to scale up operations, improve efficiency, and ensure compliance with evolving regulatory requirements.
In a significant development for the company, Dispersa AG was acquired by Ciba Vision AG, a prominent player in the global eye care industry. This acquisition integrated Dispersa’s manufacturing expertise and product portfolio into Ciba Vision’s extensive operations, providing new opportunities for growth and innovation through access to international markets and resources.
Following the acquisition by Ciba Vision, the Hettlingen manufacturing site was further integrated into the global pharmaceutical landscape when Novartis, a multinational healthcare company, took over Ciba Vision. The facility was subsequently renamed Novartis Ophthalmics AG, reflecting its new status as part of Novartis’ specialized ophthalmic division and its role in supporting the company’s worldwide eye care initiatives.
Novartis Ophthalmics AG underwent another transformation when it was acquired by Fareva, a leading contract manufacturing organization. The site was renamed Excelvision AG, marking its entry into the Fareva Group’s network of pharmaceutical manufacturing sites. This change brought new investment and a focus on contract manufacturing for international clients, further enhancing the site’s reputation for quality and reliability.
Excelvision AG embarked on a comprehensive upgrade of its facilities to meet the latest Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. This modernization project included significant investments in equipment, infrastructure, and quality systems, ensuring that the Hettlingen site remained at the forefront of pharmaceutical manufacturing and regulatory compliance.
Excelvision AG achieved a major milestone with the successful approval of its facility by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This certification enabled the site to manufacture and export sterile ophthalmic products to the United States, opening new markets and solidifying its reputation as a world-class pharmaceutical production center.
In early 2015, Akorn, Inc. completed the acquisition of the FDA-approved ophthalmic manufacturing facility operating as Excelvision AG. Following the acquisition, Akorn began the process of transferring the manufacturing of certain ophthalmic products to the Hettlingen facility, further integrating the site into its international operations.
The Hettlingen site entered a new chapter when it was acquired by Sentiss Pharma, an international pharmaceutical company specializing in ophthalmic products. Following the acquisition, the site was renamed OPHTAPHARM. This transition brought renewed focus on innovation, expansion of the product portfolio, and a commitment to restoring and growing the supply of critical eye care products for global markets.
